Around India In 80 Trains
Diu and Sassan Gir
The island of Diu was once a Portuguese colony and still maintains much of the old architecture and cuisine. In truth it's where Gujaratis go to get hammered at the weekend as it's a union territory and Gujarat, a dry-state. We stayed in a church converted into a hotel by a lovely gentleman, George D'Souza, before heading off to the home of the Asiatic lion in Sassan Gir - the only place in India where they now live. En route Passepartout drew the attention of the little girl in green who flirted wildly from the platform, and I was offered a ball of peanut candy from the noisy young Monali, at the home we stayed at for the night. If you're wondering why we, plus our friend Severin (in sunglasses) are wandering about during a safari filled with lions, our jeep had run out of petrol.
